Ludobites @ Breadbar

What exactly is Ludobites??!!
LudoBites is a guerilla style pop-up restaurant event created by Chef Ludo Lefebvre. The goal of LudoBites is to create a revolutionary new “bistronomy” cuisine that features Michelin style French tradition combined with modern technique and offered at reasonable prices.
Bites is a new business model for the restaurant industry and one that allows the chef to offer high-end food at affordable prices by keeping overhead to a minimum. LudoBites is a restaurant within a restaurant. LudoBites teams up with restaurants that only have breakfast and lunch service and offers them a nighttime event that drives both brand awareness and traffic to their restaurant. LudoBites will move to a new space every few months, similar to an artist exhibition. This business model allows LudoBites to keep prices affordable while offering quality food in a comfortable atmosphere.
Chef Ludo wants to present an atmosphere similar to the way he grew up in France, people “living” around the table. To ensure this type of environment, Ludo will be involved in every aspect of the evening. In addition to cooking your meal, he may take your order, serve your food and even clean your table.

I heard about the event from Ludobites from few of the LA region food bloggers and some of us haven’t been there yet so we decide to try it out. Since the event only be @ the Breadbar for limited time, we didn’t want to wait any longer and made the reservation within a few days from the discussion.

The chef and his wife was helping out, taking orders and cleaning out table for us. They were super friendly and very funny as well.
Shrimps, Sweet & Sour Emulsion, Rosemary $10 |
White Asparagus Veloute, Parmesan Marshmallow, Shaved Fennel, Lemon Zests $11 |
|
Okay, I didn’t eat the first course…b/c there were too many of us and very little shrimp on the plate so I decide to watch my friends eat. Not sure how it taste but I’m sure it’s very tasty. I had a little bit of the asparagus soup, that was very good…creamy luxurious texture and the presentation was just amazing, it was like an art piece by itself. Just elegant!! |
Beef Tartar, White Asparagus, Shallots, Anchovy $14 |
Miso Soup, Foie Gras, Rhubarb, Hibiscus, Beets $14 |
| When we saw beef tartar on the menu, I saw a sparkle and wanted to try it, but this dish was a little bit disappointing. The tartar itself was good, but the anchovy has such a strong flavor, it actually overpower the beef tartar a bit…and of course it’s fishy…but it’s consider an OKAY dish anyway. Miso with Foie Gras? Okay, this one tickle my curiosity…but guess what? They match well!! It remind me of Miso soup with lobster…it’s very very flavorful and the taste is a lot more richer and denser compare w/ regular miso soup you had anywhere else. I was surprised to find chunks of foie gras in the soup..big chunks. I only had them seared before but I really like them in the soup as well, they melt in your mouth instantly..just melt away. |
King Red Salmon Cube, Watermelon, Mints, Oranges Confites, Sesame Oil $13 |
Chicken Liver Mousses, Cornichons, Green Apple $8 |
| Those two were the one that I like the least, I didn’t taste the chicken liver one so I couldn’t say much about it, but the Salmon…I felt it was a little bit plain and not so special. It’s fresh and all, just that it’s lacking a kick of flavor. |
Creamy Polenta, Cantal Cheese, Oxtail Beef, Carrots $14 |
Fried Chicken in Duck Fat, Herbs of Provences, Brown Butter Mashed Potatoes $15 |
| Both Polenta & Fried Chicken were both good, most of us really like them, especially the Polenta, the portion was filling and it was very creamy and buttery, as you dig into the bowl, you will find the oxtail meat, they were so soft and again, the portion was generous. At first it didn’t really appeal to us just by looking at the menu, but it was surprisingly good and we end up order another one of it. Personally, I think the Fried Chicken was good, crispy and juicy but maybe a little bit too salty for me |
 Marinated-Grilled Hanger Steak 'Kobe Style', Yuzu-Radish $18 |
Crispy Veal Sweetbread, Foie Gras, Asian Pear, Imaginary Choucroute, Mustard $22 |
| Steak was good but we didn’t really like it that much, I would say it was a little bit ordinary but the Foie Gras…ooooooo…it was soooo tasty, granted love Foie Gras, but it was very flavorful, even though we didn’t really like the sweetbread that much. |
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get decent shot of the dessert since it was getting really dark but the Peach “Melba”, Vanilla Ice Cream ($10) was really delicious. It’s basically a porched peach w/ some sugar syrup made w/ lemon & sugar with ice cream on the side.. YUMMO~~ I also tried a few bit of the Chocolate Mousse, Ganache, Cacao Chantilly ($10), the chocolate mousse has a spicy kick to it, I suspect it either has red hot pepper or Jalapeño in the mousse, it was also delicious but I vote for the Peach Melba

Chef Ludo & his lovely wife
At the end, I look a very cute picture of the lovely couple…mmmmm…I can’t wait to go back again, anyone wanna go? We still have sometime before end of the event! Did I mention he’s on the Top Chef??!!

Wow, I’m honestly surprised you gave this high of a mark (I’d agree though). Sorry, but last night’s dinner was even better. That last dessert we had was amazing. Panna Cotta with caramel sauce with a scoop of caviar on top of the panna cotta. Simply amazing =P
If you want to come, let me know, I think Ludobites might be a weekly thing for us now….
Yes.. you had better food… but hey, for the price.. it was good. I wouldn’t compare them w/ some other place that charge $20-$30 a dish…but many b/c the company was awesome so the whole experience was even better!
Okay let me know when you guys wanna go.. I’ll tag along…heheheheheehe..
